Why is open space necessary in an urban setting?

[Edit]
  1. First open space serves an aesthetic function by simply giving people a pastoral, natural parkland to allow them to remove themselves, if even for a while from an urban setting.
  2. At the same time, it can if planned properly, give an area for passive recreation.
  3. Open space can give buffer zones to riparian corridors which at one time give runoff water a chance to be cleansed both mechanically (grass strips slow water and allow sediments to drop before entering a stream) and chemically (water is absorbed into the undisturbed soil and the harmful chemical components are bound up by the clays before they reach the stream).
  4. The last way is that they give, when strung together, wildlife corridors that allow animals unbroken pathways from one area to another.

These are just a few of the most important reasons for maintaining open space in an urban setting.
