Why is open space necessary in an urban setting? |
[Edit] |
[Edit]
- First open space serves an aesthetic function by simply giving people a pastoral, natural parkland to allow them to remove themselves, if even for a while from an urban setting.
- At the same time, it can if planned properly, give an area for passive recreation.
- Open space can give buffer zones to riparian corridors which at one time give runoff water a chance to be cleansed both mechanically (grass strips slow water and allow sediments to drop before entering a stream) and chemically (water is absorbed into the undisturbed soil and the harmful chemical components are bound up by the clays before they reach the stream).
- The last way is that they give, when strung together, wildlife corridors that allow animals unbroken pathways from one area to another.
These are just a few of the most important reasons for maintaining open space in an urban setting.
