What is the most venomous animal? In: Animal Life |
[Edit] |
A scorpion
________________
This is almost impossible to answer because when you get down to it, the King Cobra produces the most venom, Sea Snakes and the Black Mamba have the most toxic venoms, some scorpions have a such potent venom they can kill several humans with one drop, the Blue Ringed Octopus has small amounts but very potent venom. In all if it's venomous it should be considered very dangerous, no matter what animal it is.
The box jellyfish of Australia is often at the top of the various lists of the most venomous animals.
It really isn't all that difficult to answer. The one animal which most scientists accept as the most venomous, or poisonous is the Cone shell Snail which can be found in most warm salt water environments. It is so toxic that one drop is enough to kill more than 20 humans. However, there are very few fatalities attributed to the cone shell because of the marine environment it lives in. Scientists think that the reason it is so toxic is that since it is so small, the poison it uses to immobilize its prey must be very strong and act instantly to paralylse the prey and kill it.

It depends on which kind of venom you're talking about. Neurotoxic venom is generally more potent per drop. a lot of vipers and cobras use this toxin to disable their prey.
I'd like to point out that dart frogs and arrow frogs are poisonous, not venomous. There is a distinct difference. poisons are typically defensive, while venom is offensive. It's also much more inaffective on humans. Poison frogs rely on the poison entering vulnerable areas, such as eyes or mouths. Animals such as cobras that inject toxins have a much better chance of the toxin affecting the prey.

Actually there's only one breed of scorpion that can kill if the sting is left untreated, it's the Deathstalker or Israeli Deathstalker scorpion. If by most venomous you mean highest potency and amount of venom distributed in one incident, then I believe the consensus is the Box Jellyfish. The Black Mamba is not the most venemous snake, the Inland Taipan of Australia is, although because the snake is so naturally docile and the antivenin so readily available, no deaths are on record.
