What wars or major events happened directly after World War 2?

[Edit]

Answer

Straight after WW2, the world went straight into Cold War. There was no open fighting but it was mainly to do with nuclear weapons. Even though the USA, Britain, France and USSR (Russia) were allies, the USA distrusted The USSR and the USSR distrusted USA. Both had developed nuclear weapons, that could wipe out 3/4 of the UK with one missile. The only difference: the USA were capitalist and the USSR were Communist. The closest the Cold war got to turning into a nuclear war was when the USSR built a missile base on Cuba, (island right next to the USA)where the missiles would have been pointing straight at the USA's major cities. The USA blokaded the harbour and the USSR and the USA came to an agrement to where the USA would remove it's missiles from Turkey and the USSR would remove its missiles from Cuba. Also the Vietnam War happened, the Korean War, Afgan-Russian War.

The USA and USSR each formed it own Area's of Influence and Created their own Aliiances, Nato and the Warsaw Pact.

Answer

" followed by many smaller war's in various places."

Strange way of putting it. After WWII, some hundred wars have (or still are) been fought over. To mention some of the impressive list: Vietnam (15 years of war, approx. 3million civilian death, 1 million vietcong/60.000 US death), Iraq/gulf war (100.000's civilian deaths ... still counting), Iran-Iraq (8 year war, + 1million deaths), Israƫl-Egypt,Afghan-Russia (14 years, + 1million death), Agentina-UK (Falklands), ... . If you also would like to add the enourmous list of mostly ethnic conflicts: Rwanda genocide, Former Ygoslavia (Balkan war), Former USSR conflict (Tsjenia,...) 'crisises' as Cuba, Panama, ... . Matters such as IRA, ETA, ... also have killed 1000's. The list is endless (As I'm writing this, probably somewhere else in the world a 'new' item is going on).

Answer

Assuming the questioner was not asking about only wars in which the US participated openly, I would mention the civil war in China following the end of the Japanese occupation.

Answer

What is a major war? It is arguable every war is major.

There have been peace keeping operations as well as armed conflicts. You can rule out war in the US and Canada as being public. Britain France and the rests of the occupied and liberated territories were 'defended'. Although in the eastern block a number of 'wars' occured and divisions but none that became what might be considered major conflicts. The WARSAW pact was not all in alignment as it may have been veiwed to be and at times there was armed intervention or assasination.

Palistine was an ongoing crisis area and so to was Vietnam, actually Ben Gairen?? spelling and Ho Chi Mi or the major Vietnamise guy met, during this time which is sort of ironic, and generally were on good terms it seemed.

There were internal issues going on. Tibet was invaded and China itself had a civil war ongoing between the Communists and Nationalists.

Pot in Cambodia and civil wars occuring in many African countries.

France actually also had troubles it's African colonies but manged to broker peace eventually.

Latin America had a handful of civil wars.

Eventually the falkans war occured but it was more like a skirmish.

Later on we see afghanistan

Even at the end of WWII there was still some individuals who though the war was still going on. And there were hunts for some individuals

That pretty much covers the world.

this link has a pretty comprehensive list http://www.onwar.com/aced/chrono/findex1945.htm (of warlike occurances) but by no means complete. Every criminal action is an act of civil war.
