Cleaning an old bath tub
Toothpaste rubbed in to the tub and left for one or two days works very well. Also, shampoo using the same technique -- the best shampoos are the ones for oily hair.U can try lysol and leave it in there for a hour.
More advice from FAQ Farmers:
- Have you tried a Mr.Clean eraser? They work well. Also, spray clorox bleach with teflon on it let it soak then try the eraser on it.
- I had the same problem and used a more expensive powder cleanser (not comet or ajax). It was about 3-4 dollars a shaker bottle and i had doubts but boy is it wonderful compared to the two I mentioned!! Worked Fab!
- Try Barkeeper's Friend. (Buy it where you buy Comet or Ajax) It doesn't have a nice fresh scent, but it has removed all kinds of stains off my old tub.
- Mix a paste of four tablespoons of flour, four tablespoons of white vinegar and eight tablespoons of peroxide. Please use protective gloves. Apply the mixture to the staines. Leave for a couple of hours then scrub clean with a brush and cold water. Good luck.
- You might try using hot white vingar it works on almost anything. It disolves lime and calcium and such.
- My old tub looked terrible and I scrubbed and tried everything. The best way I found was to yank the old tub out and replace it with a new tub. New tub and new tile sure is nice. I liked it so well, I replaced the other tub upstairs as well. They now both look great. I spent about $300 on each tub but each bath cost me around $3000 with everything else.
Enamel/cast iron baths
Cast iron and porcelain tubs when old and worn are really difficult to clean.I purchased my home 10 years ago and could not afford to repalce or renovate. The tub looked filthy although I knew I had bleached and disinfected well. I finally realized it was cast and porcelain just like my oven. I sprayed easy off and let it sit. All the dark dripping ugly stains went away. It left a white cast at first but with regular use of household cleaners that went away and I have never had to apply the easy off oven cleaner again.
- But be careful! On an old cast iron bath, some chemicals can damage the enamel. Use a mix of lemon juice and flour, spread on the paste, leave it overnight and wash it away. Cleans off almost anything.
I once inherited an old toliet from a home i bought, i had tried just about everything for the stains, so I drained the water with a towel, I used gasoline or paint thinner, RUBBING IT ON WITH A DRY WASHCLOTH!! Do not pour it on or in the tub or toliet, this was the best result for me, as i had tried baking soda, lime away, washing soda, lemon juice, vinegar, efferdent tablets, chlorine bleach you name it, the stains had to have been on there for over 10 years. Some of the older stains from years ago came from water supplied from a community well, even today you can see a dark pink ring from community water and wells
I used to own a cleaning business and often ran into tubs/showers and jacuzzi's that were stained with rust and lime that would never come clean. I purchased CLR and it takes it all off immediately. These old ruined tubs looked just like new. Be careful of the fumes. It works better than anything I have ever used but you need to ventilate the room.
the best thing I have found is shaking Ajax in the tub and scrub with a wet facecloth it works every time and only takes about 15 minutes including rinsing out the tub
